The O'Neill Volunteer Fire Department recently announced that the department has been awarded $75,000 towards the purchase of a new ambulance. Alex Miles, O'Neill Ambulance Captain received notification that the department was the recipient of a Nebraska Ambulance and Equipment (NAE) grant through the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services. The grant is to be used towards the purchase of a new ambulance. Ambulances of the type O'Neill uses can run upwards of $350,000. The department has been cost saving with the purchase of its last two ambulances buying squads that have new chassis but using a remanufactured box. The City of O'Neill and The O'Neill Rural Fire Board share the cost of the equipment including ambulances. The new squad will have to ordered in the next two years to use the grant. The O'Neill Department maintains three ambulances and in the previous year responded to well over 400 runs in service to the community.
