September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month with the designated color being gold. In observance of this special month, a "Gold Out" was planned with the foundation giving out free gold t-shirts to fans to wear to the game. More than 350 officially collegiate licensed Nebraska Fight for a Cure t-shirts were given to fans throughout the week, which was evident at the game. The Huskies football team wore their gold shirts to school Friday and sported gold ribbons on their helmets at the game Friday night. During the game the public address announcer shared facts about childhood cancer and the Team Jack Foundation. The foundation passed buckets around during halftime and combined with donations received during the week, $1,237.83 was collected to help fund child brain cancer, the leading cancer cause of death in children. Although the Huskies lost the hard-fought battle with Burwell, 48-21, childhood cancer won big with both awareness and research funds being raised. A special thank you to the businesses that sported the gold shirts during the day to help raise awareness and to Dollar General for graciously donating 100 helium-filled gold Team Jack balloons. The balloons were given to kids, many of which were released when the Huskies scored on their game-opening drive. The foundation is grateful for the support from the West Holt Huskies and the Atkinson community and enjoyed having everyone stop into our office during the week. If you received a free t-shirt please continue to wear it proudly throughout the month of September in honor of all the children that have fought or are currently fighting cancer. In addition to the "Gold Out" fun, the $5 Bits of Broken Chair Trophy was present at the game. This unique, golden, broken chair is a rivalry trophy that is battled for each college football season when the Nebraska Huskers and Minnesota Golden Gophers meet on the gridiron. The Team Jack Foundation and University of Minnesota Masonic Children's Hospital are the two non-profits that benefit from the awareness and funds raised through the efforts of two alumni groups, one from Nebraska and one from Minnesota. Since the Huskers won the meeting last year, the Team Jack Foundation has had the pleasure of displaying the trophy. During the month of May, which is Brain Cancer Awareness Month, the trophy was proudly displayed at Children's Hospital and Medical Center in Omaha. (0) COMMENTSWelcome to the discussion.
