Vikings Slash Cards 32-20

The St. Mary's Cards traveled to Wausa for their season opener on Friday, Aug. 26 and met a formidable opponent, losing 32-20.

The Vikings ran 61 plays with 20 first downs and had 16 penalties for 147 yards.

The Cards ran 57 plays and had 11 first downs with five penalties for 30 yards.

The game was a tough match as neither team made it on the boards until the third quarter when the Card's Issac Everitt scored an 11-yard touchdown run to put the Cards up by six.

Wausa's Jaxon Claussen put the Vikings on the board with a nine-yard touchdown run and then added two on a pass for the extra points. The Cards countered when Gage Hedstrom ran a seven-yard touchdown to put the Cards ahead 12-8.

Wausa dumped in two rushing touchdowns. Josh Wattier ran in a quick three-yard touchdown, and Tug Dawson ran in two. Wattier scored again on a 53-yard touchdown run, and Dawson made the extra two for the Vikings. St. Mary's tried to keep up with the Vikings and didn't disappoint when Hedstrom hit Everitt for a 48-yard touchdown catch, and then Hedstrom hit Carson Dannenbring for the two-point conversion.

The Vikings finished their victory over the Cards with a 17-yard touchdown by Wattier, and another two-point conversion by Dawson.

Hedstrom threw 12 times for four completions, nine yards and one touchdown.

Hedstrom led the rushing with 11 carries for 73 yards and one touchdown; Everitt, 10 carries for 44 yards and one touchdown; Dalton Alder, nine carries for 19 yards.

Everitt had three catches for 76 yards and one touchdown. Alder had one catch for three yards.

Hedstrom had 152 total yards, Everitt 120 yards, Alder 22 yards and Jace Rosenkrans 15 yards.

Everitt led the defense with 28 tackles, Wyatt Scokfield 12 tackles, Hedstrom 11 tackles; Rosenkrans seven tackles, Alder six tackles, Risken Dawson and Sam Barlow two tackles, and Joseph Wiese and Jack Gydesen one tackle each.

Rosenkrans had one sack for an eight-yard loss.

The Card's next game will be Thursday, Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. against Randolph at home.
