U.S. Sen. Deb Fischer and her staff took time on Thursday, April 2, to visit Avera St. Anthony's Hospital to tour the facility and meet with staff and providers. Sen. Fischer recently supported a congressional directed spending request of $3.5 million to replace the steam boilers and water heating system that were damaged in the explosion in October 2024. Congress and the President approved that request earlier this year. The City of O'Neill helped Avera St. Anthony's Hospital apply in April 2025 for the federal funding through Sen. Fischer's office. The following individuals wrote letters of support for the application: • Barry DeKay, State Senator • Bill Tielke, Chairman of the Holt County Board of Supervisors • Heidi Kuklis, North Central District Health Department • Shelby Regan, Holt County Economic Development • Lauri Havranek, O'Neill Chamber of Commerce This funding will be transformational for Avera St. Anthony's infrastructure and ability to serve the community for decades to come. In addition to showing Sen. Fischer the equipment the federal funding will help replace, Avera St. Anthony's Hospital leaders had the opportunity to share about the hospital's breadth of services, 17-county regional reach, and to highlight many departments on the tour, including primary care, specialty care, labor and delivery, outpatient dialysis and cancer care. “It truly takes a community to support rural health care, and the funding we secured would not have been a possibility without the backing of local, state and federal partners,” said John Kozyra, President and CEO of Avera St. Anthony's Hospital. “We're grateful Sen. Fischer is part of that community of support for Avera St. Anthony's Hospital.”
