Courtesy Summerland Advocate Luann Schindler After reviewing three bids submitted for a 7,200 square-foot pre-engineered metal shop, Holt County Supervisors, on Friday, approved a $1,798,965 bid submitted by Green Gable Contracting for a new District 6 shop, which will be located at 46748 882nd Road in Stuart. The bid also included a $25 per cubic yard cost for removal of soil and materials. The Ft. Calhoun-based business was recommended by officials from JEO Consulting, who are overseeing the project. A start date has not been set, but construction will be completed by Nov. 30, with punch list items to be finished by the end of 2026. Fuller Construction of Chadron and CL Construction of Lincoln also submitted bids. In other business, supervisors • heard a report from the Governance Committee regarding a potential telephone system upgrade. Supervisor Don Linquist Jr. said committee members discussed a cloud-based system through Applied Connective Services. "The current phone system is 20 years old," Linquist said. No action was taken. • Approved the Highway 20 interlocal agreement. • Granted surety bond approval for Christopher Kohle, Swan Township Treasurer; • Learned about a grant opportunity for potential roadway alignment, which could be used on 508 Avenue, south of Ewing. Road superintendent Gary Connot said the grant is 80/20 federal dollars. "Speece Lewis (Engineering) is going to look at it. Alignment is the biggest issue," Connot said, adding that while examining the bridge, the firm will also look at the north side of the curve by the feedlot. "I'm not saying we're going to be successful, but there's an opportunity to apply. Supervisor Bill Tielke recommended looking into the grant. "Numerous people have slipped off that curve," Tielke said. Supervisor Doug Frahm asked if the county applies for the grant, does that project continue regardless of the outcome. Tielke said he believes the project will be dependent on the grant and the scope of what needs to be done. Chairman Darrin Paxton asked if the project needs to work through the budgeting process. According to Connot, smaller improvements that can be fixed immediately will be made. "What about the rest, where people run off roads?" Frahm asked. "At the Amelia corner, we run about six off the road. Connot said frequency and severity of crashes, along with traffic count, will help prioritize projects. Supervisor Duane Neiman made a recommendation to pursue grant funding. The application is due in approximately 30 days.
