Summerland School Superintendent Kyle Finke notified parents, students and community members, via the school's JMC alert system, Tuesday, at approximately 4 p.m., that a student, while at work on Monday, Sept. 12, “made comments in public that he threatened to shoot up a school bus.”

According to Finke, the Antelope County Sheriff's Office was contacted and an investigation was underway immediately.

Nebraska State Patrol is assisting in the investigation.

“It is the understanding of Summerland Public School that the student has been arrested and criminally charged for the threats. We will continue to work closely with the sheriff's office and the Nebraska State Patrol and are grateful for their quick response and handling of this matter,” according to Finke's message.

Finke said the mass message was sent to provide information about the situation and “following the directives of law enforcement and legal counsel.”

“We remain confident that all of our students were and remain safe while they are at school.”

Counselors and other staff members will be available at the school to work directly with students regarding this matter.

“State and federal law limit the amount of information that the school may share with students and parents,” Finke said.

Individuals who have questions or information about the situation should contact Finke or any Summerland administrative team member.

This is a developing story. We will share information as it is made available.
