Last week it was all about the St. Mary's Cardinals boys who advanced to State play at the Devaney Center in Lincoln for State level competition. Wednesday, March 11 the team was pitted against a 16-11 Wynot team to kick off State play.

To say this game wasn't charged would be a lie as the Cards wanted a little payback from their state football loss at the hands of the Wynot Blue Devils. It was a battle from the start,  but the Cardinals quickly moved ahead, 30-15 in the beginning half.

The Devils took a final shot and started to overpower the superior ranked Cardinals. It was to no avail, however, and the Devils were forced to concede from the competition.

Gage Hedstrom made all the difference, sinking 19 baskets and he also had one steal; Logan Brabec had 14 points; Ben Barlow had nine points, one block and one steal; Lane Bybee right behind with eight points and one block; James Eby had four points; and Eli Banks had two points and one block.

On Friday morning the Cards faced a tough 25-2 team that went on to take the State Title on Saturday. Now, two top-level teams were going head-to-head. The Cards took the lead by one point in the opening, but the Defenders answered back in the second 11-10 to bring the game 25-25 at half-time.

With neither team letting up, the tension continued into the third quarter. A continued tie led the game to 37-37 going into the finale. When the smoke cleared, however, the Cards trailed by five to give the Defenders their long-awaited victory.

Hedstrom continued to lead the offensive with 17 points and two steals; Brabec had 11 points and two steals; Barlow behind with 10 points; Eby also up there with nine points and two steals; and Bybee had five points and four blocks.
