Richard W. Gray Richard Wesley Gray, 89, of O'Neill, died Tuesday, May 31, 2022 at Good Samaritan Society in Atkinson. Visitation was held Saturday, June 4, 2022 at Biglin's Mortuary in O'Neill. Funeral services were held Saturday, June 4, 2022 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in O'Neill. Burial was in the Highland Cemetery north of Lynch with military rites provided by the O'Neill American Legion Simonson Post 93. Memorials may be made to the family for future designation. Richard was born on Feb. 10, 1933 in Lynch, to John and Vera (Mikkleson) Gray. He grew up in the Lynch area and attended school there. When his mother passed away in 1949, being the oldest, Richard helped his father raise his sisters. Richard married Irene (Sammons) Cabbage on Oct.1, 1979 in Stockton, KS. Richard volunteered for the U.S. Air Force and entered service on June 12, 1952 and served four years. Richard worked for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad from April 1960 until he retired in 1995. In 1992, Richard received the Ak-sar-ben, Pioneer Farm Award; he was proud of the old Gray farm. Richard was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, the O'Neill American Legion Simonson Post 93, and the VFW. He enjoyed working on one cylinder gas engines in his spare time. Richard is survived by his two stepchildren Charlotte Cabbage Delaney of Phillipsburg, KS, and LeRoy (Geri) Cabbage of Garden City, KS; three step-grandchildren Mary (Mike) Fielder, Jenny (Dave) Reichard and Wes (Ashley) Delaney; four step-great-grandchildren; one sister Margaret (Gray) DeBlauw of Hartington; four brothers-in-law Elmer Sammons of Nebraska City, Joe Westover of Ashby, Mike Miller of Alamogordo, NM, and David Wemhoff of Virginia Beach, VA; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Scott and Vera Gray; his wife Irene (Sammons) Gray; four sisters Ruth Ann Fry, Abbie Westover, Betty Wemhoff and Beverly Miller; one brother-in-law Dennis DeBlauw; and one step-great-grandchild Josh Fielder.
