Posted by Bri Hoffman on Caring Bridge: Jack has had a rough couple of weeks. (But he was able to have a great Thanksgiving and spend time with family so we are very thankful for that!) After his transfusions and count recoveries we get to this last week. We were finally ready to start cycle 2 of chemo this week and were planning to start on Tuesday. On Monday he went to class but started feeling unwell as the afternoon went on and he was very dizzy and was vomiting, even after taking medication. He has made some great friends at college and they took him to the ER so they could start evaluating until I could get there. They got the vomiting stopped with IV meds and did an MRI which showed potential tumor growth and wanted us to follow up with oncology. Jack came home because he was still not feeling well and before we could go to our scheduled MRI in Omaha (so we could compare it to last time more easily) we came to Children's ER because he was vomiting again and oral meds were not working. They made some med changes and gave some IV so he was feeling better and admitted him for a couple of days to try to get on top of it. The nausea and vomiting has gotten better but the dizziness persists. His MRI this time was exactly what we have been fearing. It showed multiple new tumor locations, including in the brain stem, cerebellum, ventricles and spine. Jack is having trouble seeing (things close up and things far away are blurry), he is having some muffled speech, he is sleeping a lot, and his dizziness is starting to affect his balance and walking. He complains about his memory being worse as well. Some of the problems may be related to radiation necrosis but we are assuming most is tumor growth, as he did not have radiation to some of these areas. The most heartbreaking action I had to take today was to email Jack's professors and let them know that Jack was unable to take his final exams because of these symptoms. He has worked very hard this semester. Jack came home on Sunday and we are still praying for a miracle. He continues to fight. We are planning to see how the weekend goes and get him feeling better before we look at trying any additional treatment. Thank you for your continued prayers for Jack and our family.
