Norma Jean DeKay-Moreland, 86, of O'Neill, died Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2022, at her home in O'Neill.

Visitation was held Saturday, Dec. 3, 2022, at the Word of Life Christian Center in O'Neill.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 3, 2022 at the Word of Life Christian Center in O'Neill. Rev. James Loutzenhiser officiated.

Burial was in the Alford Cemetery in Monowi.

Memorials may be made to the family for future designation.

Biglin's Mortuary in O'Neill was in charge of the arrangements.

Norma was born on Feb. 28, 1936 in Plankinton, SD to Arthur and Velma (Hopkins) Stiefvater. She attended Plankinton Public Schools, graduating in 1954. 

Norma married the love of her life Norman DeKay on Sept. 12, 1954 in Plankinton and they were blessed with five children Rick, Dianne, Beverli, Kevin and Bruce. 

From 1955 to 1960, Norma ran a local café.

The family farmed in the Niobrara/Verdel area from 1960 to 1980. 

From 1980 to 1999, Norma was a cook for the Golden Age Center and served over 100,000 meals during a 16-year time period. 

Norman passed away in 1996 and Norma moved to Norfolk in 1999. There she was a Rescue Missions Hope house mother and had a jail ministry. 

In 2003, Norma married Robert Moreland. They adventured and built their life together in Norfolk. 

Robert passed away in 2006 and Norma filled her days helping at her church and doing outreach however she was able. 

Her passion for others led her to meet two great friends of hers Andy Worley and Martin Plowman. They took Norma on a few adventures in their aircrafts and kept her young. 

Norma returned to O'Neill in 2017 and was a volunteer for AseraCare Hospice until recently.

Norma enjoyed leading Bible studies and being a Sunday school teacher. Her passion for her Lord and Savior was incredibly evident in everything she did.

Norma is survived by her five children Rick DeKay of Omaha, Dianne (Gregg) Krupicka of Scottsbluff, Bev Alder of O'Neill, Kevin (Sharlene) DeKay of Chambers and Bruce (Cindy) DeKay of O'Neill; three stepsons Rich Moreland, Ray Moreland and Russ Moreland and their spouses and families;15 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; three brothers Bob (Rose Marie) Stiefvater of Plankinton, SD, Ed (Grace) Stiefvater of Kennebec, SD, and Larry (Ginny) Stiefvater of Glenview, IL; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Norman DeKay, husband Robert Moreland, daughter-in-law Donna DeKay and son-in-law Jay Alder.
