Marie Genevieve Liewer was born on March 20, 1920, to Theresa (Schultes) and Wendall Liewer of Butte. She was the youngest, joining five brothers and four sisters.
She attended parochial school in Butte for her elementary years, except for sixth grade when she attended the rural McCulley School nearer to their farm. She said they only had to use horse and buggy one year before getting a car. Marie's father had attended Wayne College for bookkeeping and he was intent on getting an education for his children. She graduated from Butte High in 1938. During that time Marie and two older sisters, Margaret and Mildred, boarded in town with various members of the community in exchange for light housekeeping and fresh farm commodities.
Marie then taught in rural Emerson while living with her sister Catherine McTaggart and family. Her contracts show she was paid $70 per month. She taught for three years before getting the travel bug and following another sister, Loretta, to Chicago. While living in Chicago she was a waitress and housekeeping. After a few years she and Loretta hitched a ride to Tucson, AZ, and enjoyed the sun and fun there. Marie loved city life and often talked fondly of those days.
About this time her brothers, Frank, Clem and John were living on the ranch near Butte and needed a helping hand. Marie came back and pitched in to help the family, finding time for dances and card playing. Marie married Virgil Reiman on Jan. 18, 1949, during one of the many blizzards of '48 and '49. No pictures or flowers for that day. They settled on a place one mile east of Butte while Virgil trucked and farmed. Daughter Pam arrived in October of 1954. In 1962 Marie's brother Frank and Virgil built the Butte bowling alley and operated it for approximately five years. Marie worked at the lanes and enjoyed meeting all the people associated with the business.
Virgil retired in 1972 and they moved to town. Marie had a great garden spot and gardening was one of her favorite hobbies. She also enjoyed playing cards and socializing with her buddies. She hated storms and hopefully there won't be any storms in heaven.
She began working at the Butte Healthcare Center, enjoying kitchen work and friends there for 13years. Virgil passed away in 1995 and Marie remained in her home until she entered the Butte Healthcare Center in June of 2008. She was fortunate to enjoy good health until shortly before her death.
Marie is survived by her daughter, Pam (Steve) Connick of Omaha; three granddaughters, Jennifer of Lincoln, Jessica (Brandon Morton) of Omaha and Ashley (Chase) Cushman of Washington, D.C.; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Liewer of Fairfax, SD, and Lorraine Reiman of Omaha; plus numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and siblings.
