Ludwig Tagel, age 89, of Grand Island passed away Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2011, at Tiffany Square in Grand Island.
Visitation was from 5-7:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 15, 2011, with a 7:30 wake service with Father James Kramper officiating at Snider Memorial Funeral Home in Clearwater. Music was provided by Gloria Christiansen and Brenda Riley.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2011, at St. John's Catholic Church in rural Clearwater. Father Jacob Bauer and Richard Piontkowski officiated.
Music was provided by organist, Tom Kimes, and the St. John's Choir.
Pallbearers were Mike Tagel, Brian Tagel, Chris Tagel, Brent Tagel, Travis Tagel, Jonathan Schueth, Allen Schueth, Tom Schueth and Scott Opp.
Burial was at St. Anthony's Catholic Cemetery in rural Ewing.
Snider Memorial Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Ludwig was born on Sept. 21, 1921, to John and Mary (Bauwens) Tagel at Deloit. He was baptized at St. John's the Baptist Catholic Church.
He grew up in the Deloit area southwest of Ewing. He attended school at District #146. After schooling he helped his dad on the farm.
Ludwig married Loretta Thramer on Nov. 22, 1943, at St. John's Catholic Church.
He farmed until 1982 when they moved to Grand Island where he sold machinery and scales until 2000. Loretta passed away on July 2, 2000, in Grand Island. They were married for 56 years.
He was a member of St. John's Men's Choir, St. John's Men's Club, board member of Ewing Creamery, A.M.P.I. of Plainview Nebraska Dairy Council and School District 146. Ludwig enjoyed hunting, fishing and traveling.
He is survived by one son, Joe Tagel of Springfield and one daughter, Elizabeth and husband Doug Schueth of Ewing; daughter-in-law, Pam Tagel of Grand Island and son-in-law, E.J. Opp of Wood River; 14 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren; and brother-in-law, Earl Schindler of Neligh.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Loretta; son, John (Jack) Tagel; daughter, Marilyn (Jean) Opp; a sister, Berniece Schindler; and granddaughter, Tracy Tagel.
