Leonard "Snooks" La Verne Peterson, 82, of O'Neill, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and veteran, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, Nov. 10, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of service, dedication and love.

A celebration of life service was held Friday, Nov. 14, 2025 at the church in O'Neill with military rites provided by the O'Neill American Legion Simonson Post 93. Pastor Mike Durre officiated.

Memorials may be made to the family for future designation.

Leonard was born on July 23, 1943, in O'Neill. Leonard was the cherished son of Leonard Nelson Peterson and Berniece (Evans) Peterson. He began his education at O'Neill Elementary and later moved to Omaha, where he graduated from Omaha Central High School in 1960.

Leonard proudly served his country, joining the U.S. Army that same year. He completed two years in ROTC and spent 2.5 years stationed in Berlin, Germany during the tense Berlin Wall era. His exemplary service earned him the title of Soldier of the Month seven times within his company, and he rose to the rank of Specialist 5th Class. Leonard served during the Vietnam Era and was honored with the Occupation Medal, Expeditionary Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), where he received the Vietnam VFW Pin, and was also a proud member of the American Legion in O'Neill.

After his military service, Leonard worked for Western Electric in Omaha from 1966 until 1972. He then returned to his hometown of O'Neill, where he continued to build a life rooted in hard work and community. In 1986, Leonard founded his own roofing business, working closely with Chuck Sterns before eventually selling the business to him. He officially retired from roofing in September 2024.

On Aug. 3, 1979, Leonard married the love of his life Connie (Walton) Peterson in Neligh. Together, they raised two daughters Chasity and Jennifer. Leonard was a devoted father and grandfather, always present at his children's sporting events and proudly coaching Jennifer's tournament basketball team for several years. His greatest joy came from spending time with his family and supporting them in every way.

Leonard's faith was an important part of his life, and he accepted the Lord on Sept. 23, 2009.  His strength, kindness and unwavering love for his family will be remembered always.

Leonard is survived by his wife of 46 years Connie Peterson of O'Neill; his four children Kurt Peterson of Orchard, Chasity (Andy) Starman of Commerce City, CO, Jennifer (Rick) Gartner of O'Neill and Renee (Chris) Black of Dallas, GA; six beloved grandchildren; his brother Larry Peterson of Naples, FL; and his sister Sonja Erspamer of Omaha.

He was preceded in death by his parents Leonard Peterson and Berniece Oetter, his stepfather Les Oetter, two sons David Peterson and Larry R. Peterson, three brothers and one sister.
