Hastings — Laurell Ann Haynes, 78, of Hastings, formerly of O'Neill, died Friday, Jan. 17, 2025 at Bryan West in Lincoln.

A family gathering to celebrate Laurell's life will be held this summer.

Memorials may be sent to Shriners Children's Hospitals, one of Laurell's favorite charities, in Laurell's name.  Condolences for the family may be sent to Lonna Bourn, 917 E. C Street, Apt. 1, Hastings, NE 68901.

Laurell was born in O'Neill on April 18, 1946, to Laurence and LaVerne (Nissen) Haynes, the third of five children. She attended O'Neill Public Schools, graduating from O'Neill High School in 1964, and went on to attend the Lincoln General Hospital School of Nursing in Lincoln.

Following her graduation from the nursing program, Laurell first worked at Lincoln General Hospital, then moved to Lakeworth Beach, FL, where she worked as an OR nurse for many years, a challenging career that she truly loved.

In 1992, her sister Lonna joined her and the two shared a home together in Greenacres, FL. After retirement, the two enjoyed traveling, participating in activities with the local greyhound rescue group and spending time with friends at the dog park.

In 2021, Laurell and her sister reluctantly left the warm weather and their good friends in Florida to be closer to family, settling in Hastings. There Laurell enjoyed making new friends in the Good Samaritan Village neighborhood and getting involved in the community's activities. Sadly she passed away on Jan. 17, 2025, from complications following a fall.

Laurell was a prolific reader, a wonderful cook and a generous supporter of many charitable causes, but she will be remembered most for her independent spirit, her sense of humor and the laughter that she shared with her family and friends over the years.

Laurell is survived by her two sisters Lonna (Haynes) Bourn and LeEllen Haynes, her brother Larry Haynes, her sister-in-law Virginia (Pinkerman) Haynes and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Lynn (Haynes) Buss and her two brothers-in-law Marvin Buss and Kenneth Bourn.
