Eagles Wreece Liewer hits one over the net in action last week against Lutheran High Northeast. On Tuesday, Sept. 14, the O'Neill Lady Eagles faced 8-5 Lutheran High Northeast. The Eagles never really got into a rhythm the entire night. They played flat and had trouble passing most of the night, which affected the setting and attacking areas. The Eagles fell to the Lutheran High Northeast Eagles in three sets: 15-25, 10-25, and 18-25. Serving was a highlight for the Lady Eagles with a team average of 95.5%. Wreece Liewer led the attacking game with ten kills. Keeley Chavez put up 13 assists on the night. Autumn Hilker was the leading server on the night with 12 points.
"We need to clean up some fundamentals and build our confidence on the court when we have some negative plays. Learning how to bounce back from some errors is difficult right now. If they can sustain the plays where they put it all together from pass to set, to hit, that will help tremendously," said Coach Lynae Hilker.
Liewer led the Lady Eagles with 19 kills, one ace serve, and 25 digs; Ashley Sidak five kills and nine digs; Autumn Hilker five kills, three blocks and 21 digs; Olivia Young three kills and 27 digs; Madisyn Hilker three kills, four ace serves and 27 digs; Chavez 33 set assists.
On Thursday, Sept. 16, Guardian Angels Central Catholic from West Point came to the home of the Lady Eagles. The back-and-forth play of the first set showed some good rallies and energetic volleyball. The Eagles dropped the first set 23-25 to the Lady Bluejays. The Lady Eagles started the second set keeping things tight, but then the communication and the doubt started creeping in and errors from the Eagles helped the Bluejays take a commanding win in the second 11-25. O'Neill battled back and improved their passing game, but again larger runs by Guardian Angels Central Catholic gave them the advantage and made it tough to overcome the deficit in the third and final set. The Eagles dropped the third set 19-25. Serving was led by Sophomores Chavez and Hilker each with five points, with Autumn recording one ace serve. Liewer put down seven kills and Hilker added another six kills for the Lady Eagles' attacking game. Chavez set up 19 assists to add to the effort on Thursday. Sophomores Chavez and Hilker served for five points each to lead the Eagles in serving.
"We are too inconsistent at this point in the season. We have many positive plays that show great volleyball, but we struggle to maintain that high level of play for extended periods. We are so young and still learning to play as a cohesive unit. It is difficult going through this transition period, but with time everything will improve," said Coach Lynae Hilker.
The Lady Eagles are in action next on Thursday, Sept. 23rd in Wayne. (0) COMMENTSWelcome to the discussion. |
