Lenexa, KS — Janice Gail Butterfield, 84, of Lakeview Village, Lenexa, KS, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2024 after an extended illness.

Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 6, 2024 in Topeka, KS.

Burial was in the Sweet Home Cemetery in Lebanon, KS on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2024.

Memorials may be made to the family for future designation.

Janice was born Dec. 3, 1939, at her parent's home in Lebanon, KS. She was the younger daughter by 10 years to the day of Albert and Goldie Roush.

Janice graduated from Lebanon High School in 1957 and was married to Garry Irvin Butterfield of Inman, on Sept. 20, 1959, at the Lebanon United Methodist Church. To this union, Timothy Irvin and Anthony Allen were born.

Because Garry worked in telephone construction, the couple frequently moved from job to job living in 26 towns in four states during their early marriage, eventually settling in Beloit, KS to raise their family.

Following Garry's death in 1975, Janice began a career as a legal secretary where she was first employed by Noah and Harrison Law Office in Beloit. After her two sons had left home for college, she relocated to Topeka, KS where she lived for more than 40 years.

In Topeka, she continued her career where she worked for three law firms before accepting a position as a judicial executive assistant for Supreme Court Justice Bob Abbott where she served for many years. After Abbott's retirement, she moved to the same role for Appellate Court Justice Thomas Malone until her own retirement in 2010 at age 71.

Janice will be remembered for her love of family along with her special affection for her dogs. She had numerous interests that filled her days. Most notable was her skill at cross stitching which resulted in many beautiful wall hangings and other gifts for family members and friends. She was also well-known for her Scotcharoos which would show up at any holiday or family occasion. Janice enjoyed playing games with Mexican Train as a favorite, going to movies, traveling for the holidays and following Kansas State University sports, her sons' alma mater. For her 80th birthday she celebrated by taking a cruise with her whole family. Everyone who visited her home was well-fed and made to feel welcome.

Janice is survived by her sister Leone Cory of Ashburn, VA; two sons Tim (Ginny) Butterfield of Aledo, Texas, and Tony (Lisa) Butterfield of Lenexa, KS; four grandchildren Chris (Jordan) Butterfield of Grand Prairie, Texas, Cameron (Kaylee) Butterfield of Azle, Texas, Lindsay Butterfield of Garden City, KS, and Tyler (Laura) Butterfield of Lenexa, KS; two great-grandsons Dean Butterfield and Wesley Butterfield; three brothers-in-law Charles (Linda) Butterfield of McPherson, KS, Larry (Kay) Butterfield of Beloit, KS, and Dan (Linda) Butterfield of Gothenburg; one sister-in-law Karen Wiseman of Grand Island; numerous nieces and nephews; ex-spouse Noble Shell whom she was married to for 13 years; and numerous other relatives and close friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Garry Butterfield and her parents Albert and Goldie Roush.
