Jackie Neil Bumgardner, age 73, of Burden KS, passed away Saturday evening, Nov. 24, 2012, at the Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center in Wichita, KS, with his family by his side.

Private family services have been planned for a later date at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery in Winfield, KS.

Miles Funeral Service in Winfield, KS, is in charge of arrangements.

Jackie was born on Jan. 18, 1939, in Ericson, the son of Harold Leon and Frances Cordelia (Page) Bumgardner. He was raised and received his early education in Burwell and then went to high school at Ericson, graduating in 1957.

After high school he joined the United States Air Force where he proudly served his country in the Vietnam War. While in the Air Force he was stationed at Lowery Air Force Base in Denver, CO, and later Kadena Air Force Base in Okinawa, Japan. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 3, 1962, and returned home to Nebraska.

Jack was united in marriage to Wilma "Elaine" Sparks on June 7, 1980, in O'Neill. The couple made their home in O'Neill where Jack managed the O'Neill Concrete Plant. He worked in several areas of construction throughout his life including working as a heavy equipment operator on the highways in Nebraska. In 1995  he and Elaine moved to Burden, KS, to be near family.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Ericson and the Burwell American Legion. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking and tinkering in his shop.

Jack is survived by his wife, Elaine Bumgardner; daughter, Brenda Harrison and husband, Mark of Orchard; stepson, Rick Stewart and wife, Terry of Arkansas City, KS; stepdaughters, Marcia "Cricket" Kielhorn and husband, Dale of Burden, KS, and Alice "Sunshine" Fortner and husband, Ron of Arkansas City, KS; his sisters, Marilyn "Tottie" Weber of White Salmon, WA,  and Shirley Lowery and husband, Melvin of Burwell; three grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren and nine step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, two daughters and a sister.

A memorial has been established in Jack's name for the Burwell American Legion. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
