Irene Lillian Heriford, age 88, of O'Neill, passed away Saturday, April 23, 2011, at the Golden Living Center in O'Neill.
Visitation was held from 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26, 2011, at Biglin's Mortuary in O'Neill.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 27, 2011, at the First Presbyterian Church in O'Neill. Rev. Leanne Masters officiated. Music was provided by Deb Frederick, organist and Shari Brosz, soloist.
Burial was in the O'Neill Prospect Cemetery.
Biglin's Mortuary in O'Neill was in charge of the arrangements.
Pallbearers were John T. Miller, David Hershiser, Ivan Wayman, Bennett Miller, Danny Hershiser and Chuck Wrede.
Honorary pallbearers were nieces, Sister Jeannine Hershiser, Ann Wrede, Judy Holz, Mary Beth Hershiser and Carolyn Johnson.
Irene was born Nov. 25, 1922, at O'Neill to Clyde and Genevieve (Wayman) Hershiser. She grew up in O'Neill along with her two brothers. She attended the O'Neill Public Grade School and in May of 1941 she graduated from O'Neill Public High School. Irene worked at the Production Credit Association, Holt County ASCS Office and also worked at O'Neill Public Schools. On May 28, 1947, Irene was united in marriage to Bennett Heriford at the O'Neill Presbyterian Church. To this union one daughter was born. They made their home in O'Neill where they owned and operated the M&M Bakery and Cafe from 1947 until they retired in 1977. Bennett passed away May 20, 1998.
Irene was a member of the Presbyterian Church in O'Neill for 50 years, Janwa Card Club, Rebekah Lodge, American Legion Auxiliary and V.F.W. Auxiliary and O'Neill Antique Club.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary Ellen Miller and husband Roger of Sioux City, Iowa; two grandsons, John Miller and wife Peggy and Bennett Miller and fiance Christy all of Sioux City, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Ethel Hershiser and Leona Hershiser both of O'Neill; and cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bennett; and two brothers, Floyd and Fritz Hershiser.
