The 2026 Mid-Term Election is starting to take shape. Tuesday, Feb. 17, was the deadline for incumbents to file for election. The Primary Election will be held on Tuesday, May 12. As of Tuesday, Feb. 17, the following offices have had people file for office. In the Supervisor District One fillings Steve Boshart has filed to challenge the incumbent Josh Treptow; In the District Three Supervisor race Doug Wrede is the only one running currently in the office to be vacated by Bill Tielke who is not seeking re-election; In the Supervisor District Five race Bryan Walter has filed to challenge incumbent Douglas Frahm; In District Seven Duane Neiman is the only runner in the race to be vacated by Don Butterfield. Stefani Colfack is the only runner for the office of Holt County Clerk, current clerk Cathy Pavel has chosen not to seek re-election; Sheriff Ben Matchett is also not seeking re-election and Ed Nordby is running to fill the office; Offices that are also up for re-election that are not contested at this point are County Attorney, County Assessor; Clerk of the District Court; Public Defender; and County Surveyor. In the City of O'Neill, there is a mayoral race between incumbent Mayor Scott Menish, Kayla Burdick, Dean Sidak, and Quana Wheeler. O'Neill Ward One Michelle Liewer, Ward Two Tim Schneider, Ward Three Paul Asche, and Ward Four Beth Walsh are also up for election currently, with no challengers. The O'Neill School District will have an election for up to three seats, with Ryan Kelly, Aaron Troester, and Monica Huber all running. The Stuart Public School will have an election for up to three with Eric Kohle, Joshua Olberding, and Jared Wolf all throwing their hats into the ring; West Holt School Boards election is seeking votes up to three with Brian Mlady, Nick Konrad and Susan L. Judge running; In the Chambers Public School race for up to three only Jamie Tomjack has filed to run. The Stuart/Atkinson Airport has Daniel L. Riha running for office; In the City of Atkinson, Scott Shane is the only filer for a vote up to three. Among the 2026 election dates to know: Feb. 17 — Last day for any current officeholder to file for the primary election. March 2 — Last day for non-officeholders to file for the primary election. March 20 — Deadline for the Secretary of State to certify the primary election ballot. May 1 — Final day for write-in candidates to request counting of votes or withdraw consideration, final day for in-person voter registration for the primary election, and last day for absentee voting application to be submitted for the primary election. May 12 — Statewide primary election. June 8 — Board of State Canvassers meets to certify the primary election results. July 2 — Deadline for citizen-led ballot measures to submit petition signatures. July 15 — Last day for any current officeholder to file for the general election for an office not on the primary election (boards for certain public power districts, reclamation districts, educational service units, county weed districts, townships, and villages). Aug. 3 — Last day for non-incumbents to file for the general election for an office not on the primary election and for judges to confirm whether they'll seek retention. Final day for primary election-nominated candidates to withdraw from the ballot. Sept. 11 — Deadline for the secretary of state to certify the general election ballot. Oct. 23 — Final day for write-in candidates to declare for office or withdraw consideration, final day for in-person voter registration for the general election, and last day for mail-in voting application to be submitted for the general election. Nov. 3 — Statewide general election. Nov. 30 — Board of State Canvassers meets to certify the primary election results.
