Gene W. Liermann


Gene William Liermann, age 78, of Amelia, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012, at the Atkinson Good Samaritan Center in Atkinson.

Visitation was held from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, March 2, 2012, at the Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 3, 2012, at the Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell with Pastor Ken Dalke and Pastor Randy Schmeichel officiating.

Burial was in the Chambers Cemetery in Chambers.

Gene was born on May 12, 1933, to Claude and Lizzie (Schutt) Liermann. Gene's siblings included a brother, Ivan, who died at age six, and two sisters, Mary (Wayne) Lakin and Mershon (Lonny) Franssen.

He graduated from Burwell High School and in 1953, he entered the Army where he served in the 802nd Engineers Division. He served in Japan for a year and a half and then returned to the family ranch,  enjoying his cattle operation.

In September of 1955, he was united in marriage to Erna E. Penner. To this union three children were born: Shari, Jeannette and Charles.

Gene remained active with the 802nd Engineers Division, attending reunions and maintaining contact with fellow service members. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #298 of Burwell, the VFW of O'Neill, and the DAV Chapter 41 of Broken Bow.

Gene is survived by his wife, Erna; his three children and spouses: Shari (Darrell) Buoy of Burwell, Jeannette (Robert) Kloppenborg of Marysville, KS, and Charles Liermann of Amelia; five grandchildren: Sara (Kloppenborg) Ramirez, Chris (Diane) Kloppenborg, Barbara (Buoy) Trollope and husband, Mike, Brenda (Buoy) Brott and husband Everett, and Jason Buoy; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and two sisters.

Memorials are suggested to hospice.
