First Of Rural Workforce Housing Nears Completion

Nov 13, 2024 (0)

RURAL WORK FORCE HOUSING HOMES - The first homes built in O'Neill from a Nebraska Department of Economic Development Rural Workforce Housing Grant have been completed.

The first homes built in O'Neill from a Nebraska Department of Economic Development Rural Workforce Housing Grant have been completed.  This project was a joint venture between the State of Nebraska, O'Neill Area Chamber of Commerce, O'Neill Development Corporation, and City of O'Neill. $500,000 was raised locally which was then matched by $1,000,000 from the Nebraska DED. Once these revolving funds have been for local housing projects, the community gets to retain the funds for future initiatives.

In the first use of project funds, three single family homes were built on Kros Dr in northwest O'Neill.  Jon Loutzenhiser of Master Envisions LLC and Chris Sobotka of CS Construction were the general contractors of the project.  One of these homes is already under contract and two are still available for sale.

According to O'Neill Area Chamber of Commerce Treasurer Joel Steinhauser, this is just the first of many different projects to come from the venture.  “We expect to have another housing project started next spring to bring more housing units to O'Neill.  In addition, we plan to roll out further uses of the program dollars, including home rehabilitation funds to update current housing stock and down payment assistance funds.  These funds get to stay in O'Neill forever, and our goal is to provide affordable housing options for our current residents and attract families to our community that want work and raise their children in rural Nebraska.”
