The O'Neill Eagles softball team started their regular season this past week defeating St. Paul 7-2 on Thursday and winning one at the York Tournament on Saturday. The Eagles traveled to St. Paul on Thursday, Aug. 18 and beat St. Paul 7-2. The Eagles fired up the offense in the second inning. Autumn Emme doubled on a 1-0 count, scoring one run. Ryanne Pistulka was the winning pitcher for O'Neill. The righty lasted seven innings, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out ten. Charlee Wegner took the loss for St. Paul. The pitcher surrendered five runs on three hits over one and one-third innings. The Eagles collected nine hits on the day. Mariana Montes and Pistulka all managed multiple hits for O'Neill. Pistulka and Montes all had two hits to lead the team. On Saturday, Aug. 20 the Lady Eagles traveled to York for varsity action. The Eagles out-hit York eight to six, but it wasn't enough in a 4-3 loss. The Eagles fired up the offense in the first inning. Autumn Emme drove in two when Emme singled. York pulled away for good with two runs in the third inning. In the third Avery Albers singled on a 0-2 count, scoring one run. Lauren Mattox was the winning pitcher for York. The hurler allowed eight hits and three runs over six innings, striking out four. Emma Smith surrendered four runs on six hits over five innings, striking out six. Loretta Scofield went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the Eagles in hits. In the second game on Saturday the Eagles downed Fairbury. The Eagles snatched the lead late in the game in an 8-3 victory over Fairbury. The game was tied at three with the Eagles batting in the bottom of the fourth when Pistulka singled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run. Fairbury fired up the offense in the first inning. An error scored one run for Fairbury. Pistulka got the win for the Eagles. The fireballer went five innings, allowing three runs on five hits and striking out six. Sam Schmidt took the loss for Fairbury. The hurler lasted three and a third innings, allowing five hits and five runs while striking out four. Pistulka went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead O'Neill Eagles Varsity in hits. Fairbury saw the ball well today, racking up five hits in the game. Izzy Ohlde and TaLeia Cervantes all had multiple hits for Fairbury. In the last game on Saturday the Eagles fell to Grand Island Central Catholic 6-2. The Eagles got things moving in the first inning. Autumn Emme grounded out, scoring one run. Grand Island Central Catholic pulled away for good with two runs in the third inning. In the third Ryanne Pistulka induced Hannah Greathouse to hit into a fielder's choice, but one run scored. GICC scored three runs in the fourth inning. Madison Dvorak, Kylie Gangwish, and Avery O'Boyle each drove in runs during the inning. Logan Rainforth was the winning pitcher for GICC. The fireballer lasted five and two-thirds innings, allowing four hits and zero runs while striking out three and walking zero. Pistulka went three and a third innings, allowing five runs on five hits, striking out four and walking one. Harley Cahoy, Mariana Montes, Emerson Mlnarik, and Emma Wrede each managed one hit to lead the Eagles. Gangwish went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Grand Island Central Catholic in hits. Grand Island Central Catholic was sure-handed in the field and didn't commit a single error. O'Boyle had the most chances in the field with five.
