Eagles Finish Season With Loss To Wayne

O'Neill's Drew Morrow takes a jump shot in last Saturdays, Feb. 26 district game held at Wayne.

The O'Neill Eagle Boys Basketball team has finished their season with a 54-38 loss against the Wayne Blue Devils at the district final game on Saturday, Feb. 26. The Eagles finished their season 20-6 .

On Tuesday, Feb. 22 the Eagles hosted Battle Creek and downed them 58-48 in the first round of sub-districts.

The Eagles played a fast style of offense which the Braves weren't able to keep up with and led at the half 30-19.

The second half saw the Braves try to make a comeback out scoring the Eagles. The Eagles first half lead held and propelled the Eagles to victory.

Landon Classen led the Eagles with 20 points, shooting four of eight for fifty percent in two pointers and six of 11 for 55 percent from the charity stripe. Classen had 11 rebounds and two steals; Brady Sidak 13 points, six rebounds and one steal; Keaton Wattier 11 points and 10 rebounds; Brady Eichelberger six points; Kyler Dean five points and two rebounds; and Drew Morrow three points, one rebound and one steal.

On Thursday, Feb. 18 the Eagles downed the Pierce Bluejays 56-52 in the sub-district final.

The Eagles started off slow, trailing by four at the end of the first quarter, but saw the buckets come easier in the second quarter, putting up 19 to the Bluejays 11 to lead at the half 25-22.

The Eagles kept the lead from the first half in check as both teams scored 31 in the second half.

Morrow led the Eagles in this contest racking up 20 points. Morrow hit 11 of 12 from the charity stripe for 92 percent. Morrow had six rebounds and one steal; Wattier 16 points, 10 rebounds and two steals; Dean 10 points, five rebounds and one steal; Sidak six points and one rebound; and Classen four points, four rebounds and one steal.

On Saturday, the Eagles traveled to Wayne for the district game. This would be the third time meeting the Blue Devils and the third loss at their hands losing 54-38.

The Eagles got a good start on the Blue Devils and led by two by the end of the first quarter. The Blue Devils came back in the second quarter to lead by two at the half 20-18. The Blue Devils came out scoring in the second half putting up 16 points while holding the Eagles to nine. The fourth stanza was more of the same and when all was said and done, the Blue Devils came away with the 16 point victory and the ticket to the state games.

Classen led the Eagles with twenty-one points, two rebounds and five steals; Wattier seven points, eight rebounds and one steal; Sidak four points and three rebounds; Dean four points; and Morrow two points and one rebound.
