Last week was a milestone for the basketball boys at OHS this season. After a slow start to the competition, the Eagles finally caught the break they had been longing for. But before the boys realized their long-awaited moment, they had to go through one last rough patch against Pierce. The Eagles established a dominance in the opening, sinking the opponent 12-4 for an early eight-point lead. Quarter two the boys dropped the ball when they faltered 8-3, but they still clung on to the advantage from their strong start. It was back to the Eagles when they stole back the third by one single point. Just when it seemed like the Eagles were about to realize their first season victory, they made a big fumble in the final decisive moments. Pierce bit back in the finale 11-4 to steal the match right from under the Eagles' feet, taking it 37-34. Turner Heiss led the offensive with 13 points, four rebounds and two steals; Ryder Kelly had 11 points and one steal; Porter Mathews had four points, nine rebounds and two steals; Nate Brown had four points, one rebound and one steal; Zachery Buller had two points and one rebound; Colten Shoemaker had two rebounds and two steals; Cooper Mckay had two rebounds; and Brock Latzel had one rebound. OHS 12 3 15 4 34 PHS 4 8 14 11 37 After a couple of days of reflection, the boys had another chance to make things right when they visited Summerland. The beginning was looking as grim as the rest of the Eagles' previous match-ups, taking an early 15-8 hit, followed by a further 15-13 drop-off. Down but not out, the team didn't let this discourage them; instead, they took it as an opportunity to kick things into high gear. They stole the third quarter right from under the Bobcats 24-8 to bring the game back to them. The Eagles didn't stop there and added further insult to injury for a victorious day. Turner Heiss stole the show with 24 points, 10 rebounds and four steals; Kelly also scored big with 18 points, five rebounds and one steal; Shoemaker had nine points, two rebounds and one steal; Mathews had six points, nine rebounds and one steal; Maguire Heiss had three points, four rebounds and two steals; Brown had two points, four rebounds and one steal; and Latzel had one steal. OHS 8 13 24 17 62 SHS 15 15 8 11 49 Things were finally looking up for the Eagles, but they weren't in the clear yet. They still had yet to clear Wayne. Continuing from the last match, the Eagles lagged behind at the start. By half-time, the scoreboard read 29-16. If the boys were to hold on to victory, they had quite a hurdle in front of them. Again, undeterred, the boys blew past the Blue Devils in the third period. But the opponent wouldn't stay down for long, quickly bouncing back in the finale to end the Eagles' short-lived time in the spotlight. T. Heiss had a big role with 19 points and five rebounds; Kelly had 14 points, three rebounds and one steal; Mathews had three points and 13 rebounds; Brown had two points and two rebounds; Braxen Eichelberger had three rebounds and three steals; and Shoemaker had one rebound. OHS 9 7 15 7 38 WHS 16 13 10 8 47 Due to the Holidays, the athletes will take a break until they return to the court Monday, Dec. 29, against Boyd County. Until then, the Eagles leave their record this season at 1-5.
