Second Place - O'Neill's Wrestling Team placed second at Wood River tourney held last week.

This past Friday the Eagle wrestlers traveled South to Wood River for a 17 team tournament. The team finished second to Class C number one ranked Aquinas. Champions for the Eagles were John Alden at 113lbs., Ty Rainforth at 138lbs. and Brady Thompson at 145lbs. Brady was named outstanding wrestler of the tournament besting three other ranked wrestlers including the number two and three ranked wrestlers in his Class C weight class. Both Alden and Rainforth dominated the field, pinning their way though the tournament.

Levi Drueke finished as tournament runner-up at 160lbs., while Oliver Schluns finished third at 152lbs. Salvador Rodriguez and Freshman Pryor Mathews finished in fourth place at 195lbs. and 132lbs. respectively.

This was the Eagles first year attending the meet in Wood River. “It was a good event. We brought some young guys in, JV™s competing in the Varsity field. Everyone was able to notch at least one win on the day. We saw our guys make adjustments between matches. They were very coachable. The sky is the limit when you can keep climbing like that,” commented assistant coach Bryan Hoefer.

The O™Neill team will look different as we look ahead to the 2 day Valentine Invite next weekend and beyond the Christmas break. “We are still getting some guys into the lineup, battling some illness and other things. We also have some guys that are still getting to the weight classes they plan to compete in at the District tournament.”

On Thursday night the Eagles will travel to Elkhorn Valley to wrestle two duals as a part of a four team field. The Eagles will wrestle Pierce and Battle Creek in action that starts at 6 p.m.
