It's conference basketball time and the Eagle boys are 4-14. The Eagles wins this year thus far are over Summerland 62-49, Boyd County 76-45, Ainsworth 53-45 and West Holt 51-44. The boys took a loss in the first round of Mid-States conference 60-47 on Saturday. In last week's action the Eagles fell to Norfolk Catholic 74-49 and got the 51-44 win over the West Holt Huskies, and then lost to GACC 60-47 in the first round of conference play. The first challenge for the Eagles was the Norfolk Catholic Knights that downed the Eagles 74-49. The Eagles came out scrappy only three points behind at the end of the first stanza. The Eagles kept pace through the second quarter and led at the half 29-25. The Knights took the third period out scoring the Eagles four times over, 24-6. The Eagles tried for a comeback but the damage of the third worked against them. Turner Heiss led the Eagles with 20 points, Heiss hit one three pointer and five of seven free throws; Ryder Kelly had 11 points was six of seven from the charity stripe and was one of four in the three point category; Braxen Eichelberger had seven points and was three of 10 in shooting, Eichelberger shot one for one in free throws; Porter Mathews had four points; Maguire Heiss, Brock Latzel and Colten Shoemaker each had two points. On Thursday Jan. 29 the Eagles got their fourth win over West Holt winning 51-44. Although The two teams have had a bumpy ride up to this point with four consecutive losses for O'Neill and 12 for West Holt. The Eagles came away with a solid win. Eichelberger had 14 points shooting 47 percent from the floor and was two for seven in the three point range; Kelly had 13 points and was five of 14 in the two point category; Heiss put down 12 points shooting 37 percent and two for two on free throws;Shoemaker got six points; Mathews had four; and Heiss had two points. The Eagles started off Mid-States action drawing GACC. The Eagles fell by 13 losing 60-47. GACC out scored the Eagles in every quarter as the Eagles were trailing at the half 24-18. The Eagles tried to keep pace with the Bluejays but fell short. Heiss had 15 points; Eichelberger had 15; Mathews and Heiss each had six; and Kelly had three. Mathews and Kelly each got into foul trouble drawing four each.
