Dr. Gutshall Inducted As Fellow In American College Of Physicians

Dr. Barbara Gutshall

On April 7, Dr. Barbara (Barbie) Gutshall was inducted as a Fellow in the American College of Physicians (ACP) at the annual convocation ceremony during the Internal Medicine 2011 meeting. Some 10,000 physicians attended this international meeting, held this year in San Diego, CA.

The Convocation of the American College of Physicians is an annual ceremony, started in 1916, whereby the college recognizes and applauds its new Fellows and the recipients of various honors. It is a ceremony of tradition, transition, renewal, and celebration. It emphasizes the collegeʼs mission to promote excellence in internal medicine.

Fellowship is an honorary distinction given to recognize ongoing individual service and contributions to the practice of medicine. To be elected a Fellow, physicians must be recommended by other ACP Fellows who must attest to the applicantʼs character, ethics, and excellence. Fellows must show that they are always growing and learning. Examples

of such activities include teaching, research, publishing scientific articles, performing public service, and receiving advanced training.

Thomas G. Tape, MD, FACP, governor of the Nebraska Chapter of the ACP, led the newly inducted Nebraska Fellows into the convocation ceremony in full academic regalia. He said, "Fellows in ACP are a special group of doctors dedicated to continuing excellence.

Dr. Gutshall exemplifies the qualities represented by the FACP credentials that she now adds to her professional title."

The American College of Physicians is the largest medical specialty organization and the second-largest physician group in the United States. ACP members include 130,000 internal medicine physicians (internists), related subspecialists, and medical students.Internists specialize in the prevention, detection, and treatment of illness in adults.

Dr. Gutshall practices general internal medicine in O'Neill, as a member of Avera Medical Group, where she and her husband Dr. Scott Gutshall, O.D. live and raise their four children.
