Dorothy Mae Anson

Dorothy Mae Anson, age 88, formerly of Grand Island, left this world to join her Maker on Father's Day evening, June 17, 2012, at the home of her daughter, Gwendolyn Doane in Superior, AZ.

A memorial service was held at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 26, 2012, at the New Life Community Church in Grand Island with guest Pastor Bob Stretch officiating. A reception followed at the church building.

Dorothy's earthly body was cremated and laid to rest in the O'Neill Cemetery in O'Neill on Wednesday, June 27, 2012.

Dorothy, the youngest daughter of Roy and Maud (Ernst) Cole, was born at home a few miles northwest of O'Neill on March 1, 1924. She barely missed being a leap year baby. She was greeted at home by her siblings Helen and Walter. The family lived in the Page and O'Neill communities.

On Oct. 8, 1946,  she married Walter Anson at the New Hope Church in Page. Their marriage lasted 66 years until her death parted them. To the marriage four children were born, Gwendolyn Marie, Wayne Melvin, Charles Martin and Danny M.

The family lived first on his parents' farm near Orchard, then on the Ralph Ernst farm on the Eagle Creek, north of O'Neill. After a few years there the family moved to a farm on the south bank of the Ponca Creek about midway between Bristow and Lynch. After the homestead flooded they relocated to Grand Island, where they lived for many years.

In December 2011, when Dorothy's deteriorating condition required around the clock supervision, she and Walter relocated to Superior, AZ, where she then lived until her death.

Dorothy primarily was a homemaker and active church worker in the Wesleyan Church in Grand Island. She supplemented the family income by taking in ironing, cleaning for a select number of ladies and part-time jobs at the Grand Island Independent and the Grand Island Salvation Army. The most common remark by those who knew her was, "She was a special lady," or "a true Christian woman."

A beloved wife, mother and grandmother, Dorothy is survived by her husband, Walter of Superior, AZ; her daughter and son-in-law, Gwendolyn and Bob Doane of Superior, AZ; her three sons and their wives: Wayne and Patti Anson, Charles and Suellen Anson and Danny and Sarah Anson, all of Grand Island. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren who are scattered from Wisconsin to Texas and Arizona. She is also survived by a few cousins and a large number of nephews and nieces plus their children and grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings, one grandson and one great-grandson.

The family requests that memorials be made to Faith Home and School, 1009 E. 6th Avenue, Mitchell, SD, 57301. You may sign the online guestbook at the independent.com.
