Council Votes To Not Allow Change Of Shamrock Color For Other Events

Dec 10, 2025 (0)

The O'Neill City Council met on Monday evening for the regular December meeting. All council members were present.

After approving the minutes, the first item on the agenda was the consideration of keeping the Shamrock at the intersection of 4th and Douglas green with a white border and no embellishments. Natalie Butterfield and the Fenian Auxiliary with the Shamrock Walk of Fame organizations stated that changing the color of the Shamrock for other events is detrimental to the history and meaning of the iconic symbol of the city, and changing the color is like changing the symbol. The groups would like to honor the Irish heritage by keeping the symbol true to its color. The council overwhelmingly passed a resolution to honor the wishes, so the Shamrock will not be changed in the future.

The following item was the discussion of the proposed demo derby location for the planned event during Summerfest. One of the proposed locations would be east of O'Neill, by the dump, where Windmill blades are stored on city property. The company that uses it for blade storage said they had no problem with the event, but would have to check with corporate officials, so, right at the moment, they couldn't commit without further consultation.

City of O'Neill Attorney Boyd Strope suggested other stretches of ground close to the same area. The group said they would check into the alternate sites to see how much space they needed and get back to the council.

The Council cleaned up three ordinances that needed to be introduced, concerning trucks spilling on roadways and the definition of rubbish and trash.

The following item concerned updating the city's regulations regarding dangerous buildings. Strope said what has been proposed came from McNally Law in Neligh, and many of the items are ones the City of Neligh uses. The Council pushed forward with updating the regulations and would revisit some questions about specifics and what other communities include in their rules.

The council approved Riley Joseph Fischer Devall for the Fire and Ambulance Department.

The council considered approving the property lease with Waste Connections, including a new fuel tank. Strope said that, working with Waste Connections, he drew up a new lease to address the new fuel tank and all liabilities that could be incurred with having the tank, as well as what Waste Connections desired. The Council decided to table the decision until the January meeting.

The Council approved an LB840 request for $10,000 for a new sign and then worked on two other LB840 items totaling $135,000 and $250,000.

The council approved the Mayor's appointments and Liaisons for the next year and then voted again for Quana Wheeler to be the City Council President again for the next year before adjourning for the evening.
