The SMH Cardinals have been a dominant force this season, and that continued into Subdistricts played last week. The boys first faced a very familiar opponent to kick off Subdistricts Tuesday. The Stuart Broncos have struggled with this match-up this season, and now would be the teams' final confrontation. It was a toss-up in the beginning, but the Cardinals overtook their opponent 21-18. Keeping the pace up, the Cards pulled ahead a further three points in the second to push the Broncos down six points at the halfway mark. With the game slipping, the Broncos tried to recover, but the dominant Cardinals weren't allowing it. Another victory in the third gave the Cards the confidence to win the game. It was a clean 4-0 sweep from the Cards to prove once and for all who belonged on top. Drew Schmaderer was on top with 16 points, shooting one of four three-pointers for a quarter percentage and five of 10 attempted two-pointers for half percent, as well as six rebounds and two steals; Trey Wallinger up there with 16 points, sinking one three-pointer and five of six two-pointers for 83 percent, as well as four rebounds and one steal; Kaige Krieger with 14 points and one steal; Kayde Ramm had nine points and eight rebounds; Nigel Addison had two points and one steal; Seth Connot also with two points; and Tommy Paxton with one rebound to end the night. SMH 21 19 14 17 71 SHS 18 16 13 12 59 One day passed, and the Cardinals were prepared for their upcoming battle with EPPJ, whom they recently demolished 77-34. Not forgetting their previous meeting, the Wolfpack were out for revenge. The Cards had trouble getting into this one, hitting a low of two points to EPPJ's eight in the first quarter. That wasn't how the boys were going out, however. They zeroed in and came back in a big way. They put up 21 in the second and held the pack down to 12. With the comeback in session, the Cards continued to push past their opponent, who were down 36-29 by the end of the third. With everything on the line, the Wolfpack played past their limits, beat back the Cards to even out the game, and went into overtime. With both teams given one last chance to prove themselves, it was a matter of life or death. But no matter how much they give, the Wolfpack were always one step behind the Cards. When the smoke cleared, the Cardinals held a 56-50 lead. Ben Barlow went on the offensive with 20 points, shooting one third of the nine three-pointers attempted and four of seven two-pointers for just over 50 percent, as well as two rebounds and one steal; Gage Hedstrom up there with 15 points, 11 rebounds and two steals; James Eby had 14 points and four rebounds; Lane Bybee had four points and six rebounds; Logan Brabec had three points and 10 rebounds; and Eli Banks had three rebounds. SMH 2 21 13 9 11 56 EPPJ 8 12 9 16 5 50 On Monday, March 2, the Cards hosted Nebraska Lutheran, a now 10-13 squad from Waco. The Knights started the game well, but the competition they put up was beyond their reckoning, with the Cards giving them a 90-58 thrashing. The Cards even threw in the bench in the second half to let loose of the throttling they were giving the Knights. Hedstrom led the Cards shooting nine of 16 in the two point range and two of six in three pointers for 24 points on the night; Logan Brabec had 23 points shooting nine of 14 in the two point range and five of 10 three pointers; Barlow racked up 14 points; Eby had 11 points; Bybee had eight points; Drake Berg had five points; Ruger Kraft had three points; and Brayden Krugman had two points. The Cards will advance to the Nebraska State Tourney next week in Lincoln with a Wednesday game; as of print time, neither opponent nor time is available.
