St. Mary's Mya Hedstrom tries to make a dash to the bucket while two Niobrara/Verdigre players attempt to stop her.

The St. Mary's Lady Cards finished their NVC run with a third-place 55-51 win over Niobrara/Verdigre on Saturday afternoon in Atkinson.

The Lady Cards battled with the Cougars for control of the match with the Cougars making a lot of inside shots to take the lead 14-9 after the first quarter. The Cards had a good second quarter out scoring the Cougars by eight to tie at the half 25-25.

The Cards came out of the half fired up and held the Cougars to five points in the third quarter.

The fourth was exciting as the Cougars weren't about to give up on the game. Halfway through the Cards had a nine-point lead but it was soon eaten away.

The Cards drew fouls late in the fourth as the Cougars were trying for a comeback. The Cougars had four of their top players in foul trouble with just over two minutes in the game left. The Card's Hope Williamson was the only Card to leave the game with five fouls but with under a minute.

The Cougars had a few tricks up their sleeve with a couple of three pointers but time ran out with the Lady Cards taking the victory.

Hope Williamson had 13 points, eight rebounds and two steals; Alissa Brabec 12 points, one rebound and one steal;

Mya Hedstrom had 11 points, six rebounds and one steal; Lorissa Reiman had 10 points and 15 rebounds; Charley Mlnarik had seven points and seven rebounds; and Annabelle Barlow had two points and two rebounds.
