The St. Mary's Cardinals traveled to Elgin for their first game of the 2021 season and downed the Wolfpack 28-7. Both sides of the gridiron started slowly with only the Cards scoring in the first quarter. After a few plays, the Cards got the first game jitters out of their system with the offense led by returning starter Aidan Hedstrom. The Cards have returned Hedstrom, Tate Thompson, Gabe Pribil, and some seniors on the line with Andrew Koehlmoos. The Cards ran 41 plays with 14 first downs and had eight penalties for 58 yards. The Wolfpack had 11 first downs and seven penalties for 42 yards. The Cards had too many go-to players for the Wolfpack that seemed to rely most of their offense on Jack Wemhoff, the quarterback. Hedstrom had nine carries for 115 yards and scored two touchdowns. Gabe Pribil had one touchdown and seven carries and 30 yards rushing, Dalton Alder six carries for 19 yards, and Tate Thompson 10 carries for 68 yards. Issac Everitt had the only receiving touchdown of the night. Everitt had two receptions for 31 yards, Alder one catch for 29 yards and Thompson two catches for 22 yards. Adam Everitt and Thompson led the Cardinals defense with 17 tackles each; Hedstrom and Wyatt Scofield each had 12 tackles; Charles Barlow 10 tackles; Alder five tackles; Issac Everitt, Jace Rosenkrans and Pribil five tackles each and Koehlmoos one tackle. The Cardinal's next game will be against Summerland on Friday, Sept. 3 at 3 p.m. in O'Neill. (0) COMMENTSWelcome to the discussion.
