Cards Defeat Creighton And Stuart Broncos

The St. Mary's Cardinals boys basketball team traveled to Creighton on Tuesday, Jan. 25 to face the Bulldogs and inflict an 80-35 loss on the home team.

The highly ranked Cards kept the Dogs at bay and kept the scoring to a single digit in the first quarter and a mere 13 in the second. The Cards led 45-20 going into the half.

The Cards kept the pressure on in the second half holding the dogs to ten points in the third. The Cards bench was called upon in the final stanza and continued to hold firm, allowing the Dogs to score only five points.

Adam Everitt led the Cards in scoring with 15 points shooting seven of 11 for 64 percent from the paint. Everitt also had 10 rebounds on the night. Isaac Everitt 13 points, three rebounds and four steals; Blake Benson 13 points, two rebounds and four steals; Charles Barlow nine points and four rebounds; Aidan Hedstrom seven points, five rebounds and one steal; Tate Thompson seven points, six rebounds and five steals; Charles Barlow six points; Kyle Pribil three points and one rebound; Dalton Alder three points and one rebound; and Wyatt Scofield two points and one rebound.

On Thursday, Jan. 27 the Cards hosted the Stuart Broncos. Always-spirited, the game started as a good match with the Broncos keeping toe-to-toe with the fast-paced offense of the Cards, only trailing by four at the end of the first. The Cards then turned the heat up in the second quarter and never looked back leading 36-23 at the half.

The second half saw the Cards broaden their lead, putting up another 42 points while the Broncos tallied up only 19 in the 78-42 Cardinal win.

Stuart Bronco Head Coach John Miller remarked, "St. Mary's was running on all cylinders, and it seemed like they never missed a shot. They are a solid team and there is not a lot of margin of error against them. We played hard until the end and did some good things execution-wise, but they hit 11 three's and we struggled to rebound against them. We will learn and continue to work to get better."

For St. Mary's, Hedstrom dominated the match putting up 27 points hitting nine of 17 for 53 percent in the two-point range and six of six from the charity stripe. Aidan had five rebounds and one steal; Isaac Everitt 18 points and one rebound; Thompson nine points, four rebounds and two steals; Benson seven points, one rebound and three steals; Adam Everitt six points, 11 rebounds and one steal; Charles Barlow six points and five rebounds; and Alder three points.

Leading the Broncos was Schulyer Mustin with 10 points and six rebounds; Ryan Steinhauser 10 points and five rebounds; Anthony Heiser eight points; Hunter Tubbs six points; Ben Paxton six points and Cameron Sattler two points.
