Cardinals To Face Howells-Dodge In Semifinals Match This Friday

Nov 12, 2025 (0)

ST. MARY'S BEN BARLOW keeps the ball away from Mason Sutton of Sandhills-Thedford.

The St. Mary's Cardinals have advanced to the Nebraska State Football  Semifinals with their recent victory over the Sandhills/Thedford Knights last Friday, Nov. 7, at home.

The Cardinals made first contact from Gage Hedstrom to Lane Bybee on a 10-yard pass. Hedstrom kept up the pressure with another touchdown immediately after. The Cards were interrupted when the Knight's Maurice Robinson put them on the scoreboard with a 14-yard run. It wasn't a problem for the Cards, as Hedstrom answered with his own run-in.

Hedstrom led the initiative in the second quarter, first passing to Ben Barlow to finish a run, then running in his own touchdown. Robinson again snuck in a score for his team after a two-yard run. James Eby saw some action after catching a pass from Hedstrom. The triple threat of Hedstrom, Barlow, and Eby together brought the second to a close with another touchdown.

Quarter three, Hedstrom ran in a 15-yard touchdown to get things started. Keigan Couch got on the board with a three-yard run, with Barlow finishing up.

The Cards dropped the ball in the finale, with Robinson of the Knights taking advantage with one last 29-yard touchdown.

It was still a one-sided game all said and done, and the Cardinals advance this Friday. Sandhills/Thedford were dropped 8-3 on the season.

The Cards totaled 50 plays for 24 first downs and had two penalties. Sandhills Thedford had 45 plays for 10 first downs and had three penalties.

Hedstrom was the uncontested MVP with 21 carries for 208 yards, totaling five touchdowns. Couch had six carries for 37 yards and one touchdown; Myles Hamilton had six carries for 29 yards; Barlow had two carries for three yards and one touchdown; Logan Brabec had one carry for four yards; Ruger Kraft had one carry for one yard.

Hedstrom also led the defenders with 14 tackles; Dalton Herley and Eli Banks both had nine tackles; Bybee had seven tackles; Barlow had five tackles; Ben Pongratz and Drake Berg had four tackles; Remington Risinger and Couch had three tackles; and Cooper Cole, John Mlnarik, Conner Banks, and Hamilton all had one tackle.

This Friday, Nov. 14, the Cardinals face an equal 11-0 Howells-Dodge in the Semifinals of the Championships.
