HEAD COACH TONY ALLEN presents senior Ruger Kraft his medal after Monday's game.

The St. Mary's Cardinals traveled to Memorial Stadium on Monday to face the Wynot Blue Devils in the Class D-2 State Championship at Memorial Stadium. The Cardinals came up short 71-60. St. Mary's finishes its season at 12-1.

The Cardinals were engaged in a scoring frenzy as the game set a record for points scored in a D-2 Playoff game.

The Blue Devils only loss on the season was to Archangel's Catholic by a score of 36-30.

The Cards had an excellent season. Gage Hedstrom, who fueled the Cardinal offense, averaged 149.7 yards a game and set the all-time touchdown record in eight-man with 186 as of last week. Keigan Couch averaged 34.2 yards per game; Ben Barlow averaged 82.4 yards receiving per game, Lane Bybee averaged 38.6 per game, and James Eby averaged 22.1 per game and stole the media show with a one-handed catch that made the SportsCenter number one play of the day. Hedstrom also averaged 9.5 tackles per game, with Dalton Herley right behind, averaging 9.2 per game, and Bybee with 8.8.

"Wynot made more plays and opened up more opportunities than we did, and that's the first time this year that really happened to us. Said Coach Tony Allen.

Wynot was an aggressive team, and they were faster and a little older, which played to their advantage.

We really had a successful year, and these kids have come such a long way. It wasn't that long ago we had a 3-5 season, and now this season we had a chance to play for the Championship, so that was a great way to end our season.

Gage Hedstrom was a real leader for the team, and through his work ethic and team leadership by working hard in practice and reviewing film, he led his team through the season and to this final game in Lincoln, and he showed the younger kids that through hard work, you can accomplish.

I really appreciate the fan base that has followed us throughout the season and to Lincoln. We really have a great fan base, said Allen
