St. Mary's also began their basketball season last week when they traveled to Osmond on Nov. 30 and took down their competition 66-49.
This was a great opening game for the Cardinals, as everyone on the team was contributing and putting up points.
Logan Brabec took charge with 17 points, shooting two of eight three-pointers for 25 percent and four of six two-pointers for 67 percent. Brabec also had four rebounds and two steals; Ben Barlow 16 points, four rebounds and two steals; Gage Hedstrom 12 points, seven rebounds and two steals; Risken Dawson nine points, four rebounds and one steal; Eli Banks four points, two rebounds and one steal; James Eby four points; Carson Dannenbring two points, one rebound and one steal; Max Berg two points and one rebound; and Drake Berg one rebound and one steal.
Just one day later the St. Mary's Cardinals hosted the Riverside Chargers and took them down 43-39.
This was a close match with a lot of twists and turns. Opening quarter tied the teams at 14 points. Quarter two saw a huge push from the Cards, leaving the Chargers to four while putting up 11 themselves.
The third quarter was another great leap for the Cards, putting them well ahead of the Chargers. The Chargers made one last effort to bring the game back-and it almost worked. They put up 18 points and held down the Cards to only 10, but it still wasn't quite enough. The Cardinals took the victory by just a few points.
Hedstrom took lead with 20 points, shooting two of 11 three-pointers for 18 percent and six of 15 two-pointers for 40 percent. B. Barlow wasn't far behind with 15 points, six rebounds and two steals; Brabec six points, six rebounds and one steal. Sam Barlow two points and two rebounds; Dannenbring four rebounds and one steal; Dawson two rebounds; and Banks one rebound.
