The Lady Cards had their season come to a heartbreaking close with their District Game loss to Fall's City Sacred Heart. The girls made the gruelling long bus trip to the southeast part of the state last Friday, Feb. 27. The Lady Cards, the underdog, showed the Irish what they were made of, leading most of the game until the fourth when the Irish made some shots that the Lady Cards couldn't recover from coming up only one bucket short of a state berth. Things were looking up for the Cardinals from the onset, pulling ahead 22-17 in the first half. It was a downward spiral from that point on, however. It started with a 10-8 to the Irish hosts, to start closing the gap. The Cards still clung on to the advantage going into the end, but they were on the ropes. Things started to unravel after the Irish began overpowering the visitors. When the buzzer rang, the Irish had successfully turned the game around, 43-40. Gracie Williamson took top honors with 15 points, shooting five of 17 two-pointers for 29 percent, as well as four rebounds; Tatum Ickes right behind with 12 points, shooting five of 11 two-pointers for 45 percent, as well as three rebounds and one steal; Emerson Mlnarik had seven points, five rebounds and two steals; Adyson Peterson had five points and three rebounds; and Cherish Williamson had one point, six rebounds and one steal. The team ends with a 13-14 record, including a high-scoring game against Stuart, 67-20. Emerson Mlnarik and Gracie Williamson were the seniors of the group. Good job to the Cardinals for going the distance and pushing all the way to Districts. Go Cardinals!
