ST. MARY'S GAGE HEDSTROM gets wrapped up by a Neligh-Oakdale player in last week's final regular season game.

The end of October is upon us, and as well as the turning of the leaves, minds are turning to the approaching high school football playoffs.

The St. Mary's Cardinals, as well as the O'Neill Eagles, are both sitting high in the rankings and eligible for post season play.

The Cardinals are sitting with a fourth-place ranking and an 8-0 record.

The Cards will face off against Creighton this Thursday in O'Neill at 7 p.m. The Cards have beaten the Creighton team once this season on Sept. 19 by a score of 66-28.

If the Cards win, they will advance to the second round of the playoffs. The game will be played on Friday, Oct. 31, against the winner of the Burwell Brunning, Davenport, Shickley game.

The O'Neill Eagles are having an impressive season this year as well. The Eagles are sitting with an 8-0 record. The team is going into their last regular-season game this week, which will take them to Columbus to face Columbus Lakeview. The Eagles have played tough ball against all their opponents this season, and the Lakeview game will be the most challenging thus far. Lakeview is tied for second place in the NSAA point rankings with Central City, and the Eagles are sitting fifth behind Sidney.

The game in Columbus will definitely be a good start for the Eagles to get warmed up for postseason play.

The Eagles' first playoff game will  also be on Friday, Oct. 31
