Last week the O'Neill Eagle volleyball girls had their hands full, playing six games across five days. The team was incredibly successful, downing five of their six opponents of the week.

Their first match-up invited the West Holt Huskies to the court during OHS's triangular competition. The visiting team was a tough competitor, but the Eagles pulled through and took them down in two sets, 18-25 and 31-33.

Taylor Young went on the offensive with 12 kills, two ace serves, two blocks, five digs and one set assist; Mariah Kallhoff was close behind with 11 kills, four ace serves, one block and six digs; Blakely Sudbeck had four kills, three blocks and nine digs; Bergyn Classen had two kills, one block and one dig; Hannah Hilker had one kill, two blocks, three digs and 28 set assists; Autumn Jackson also one kill, two blocks, three digs and one set assist; Hailey Fick had one ace serve and six digs and Serena Chavez had seven digs.

Later in the triangular, Valentine challenged the Eagles. The girls were already in the groove from their previous game, and they kept the energy going. The Eagles took the initiative from the beginning and defeated their second visitor 2-0; 25-11 and 25-18.

Sudbeck took charge with seven kills and two ace serves; Jackson had six kills and six digs; Classen had five kills and one block; Kallhoff had three kills, one ace serve, six digs and two set assists; Hilker had two kills, three ace serves, three digs and 22 set assists; Young had two kills, one block and four digs; Lindsay had one kill and one ace serve; Fick had five digs; Kellum had four digs; and Serena Chavez had two digs and one set assist.

After a short two day break the girls were at it again, this time hosting the Crofton Warriors. This was a great back-and-forth game, with the Warriors taking a hold from the start. After some great offense and defense from both teams, it came down to the fifth and the final set. Determined to keep up their great record for the season, the Eagles pushed through and took down their opponent in a decisive 15-11 finale.

Taylor Young had a great match with 21 kills, five blocks and nine digs; Kallhoff had 13 kills, one ace serve, six digs and two set assists; Jackson had 11 kills, one ace serve, one block, six digs and one set assist; Classen had nine kills, one block and nine digs; Sudbeck had seven kills, two blocks and seven digs; Hilker had four ace serve, three blocks, 18 digs and 55 set assists; Fick had one ace serve and six digs; Chavez had 15 digs and one set assist; and Kellum had six digs.

All great things must come to an end at some point, and on Sept. 13 the Eagles were served 2-0 by the Oakland-Craig Knights in the opening to the Boone Central Tournament. It was a close match-up, with the Eagles putting up 25 points in the opening, but the Knights pulled ahead by two points. Both teams kept up the pace and the Knights pulled ahead 2-0; 27-25 and 25-22.

Young again took charge with seven kills, two ace serves, three blocks and four digs; Sudbeck had four kills and three digs; Jackson had three kills, three blocks and four digs; Kallhoff had three kills, two blocks, four digs and one set assist; Hilker had three blocks, four digs and 15 set assists; Classen had one block and two digs; Fick had five digs; Chavez had two digs and one set assist; and Reagan Kaufman had one dig.

Later in the day the Eagles got back into the rhythm when they competed against Central City. It was a close game, with the Bison having a 70% win-rate last season. The Eagles just made it past in the opening act, but dropped the ball in the second set. In a nail-biting finale, the Eagles pulled ahead by a desicive two-point lead to take it 2-1; 25-23, 22-25 and 26-24.

Kallhoff took the lead with 11 kills, one block, five digs and one set assist; Classen had seven kills and two digs; Sudbeck had six kills, two ace serves and four digs; Hilker had five kills, three ace serves, 14 digs and 30 set assists; Jackson had four kills, two blocks, one dig and one set assist; Young had four kills, two ace serves, one block and six digs; Fick had one ace serve and seven digs; and Chavez had seven digs.

It was one close call after another for the girls last week when Doniphan-Trumbull entered the competition. The Cardinals made the Eagles work for their victory. Both sets came down to the wire, but the Eagles managed to take down the opposition 2-0; 25-22 and 25-20.

Classen led the team with eight kills and two digs; Young had six kills, two blocks and two digs; Kallhoff had four kills and three digs; Jackson had two kills, three ace serves, one block and five digs; Sudbeck had two kills and one dig; Lindsay had one kill; Hilker had four ace serves, three blocks, 10 blocks and 21 set assists; Chavez had nine digs; and Fick and had four digs.

The Eagles have had an excellent season thus far, having an 80% win-rate. They put it on the line Thursday, Sept. 18 when they host a strong 8-1 GACC team.
