The St. Mary's Lady Cardinals had a busy schedule last week. They hosted a game, traveled to three others and competed in Tournament play. First up the Cardinals traveled Tuesday, Oct. 8 to Elgin to face the Wolfpack. The Cards got off to a rough start for the week, falling 25-9 in the opening. The girls got it together in the second, evening out the match with a set win. The final set was a strong one, but the Wolfpack managed to get the jump on the Cards to end the game 2-1. Later in the day the Cardinals went to Humphrey to take down Archangels Catholic. The Cardinals took the first set 25-18 and only furthered their dominance in the second. After a day of rest, the girls visited North Central and hosted Niobrara/Verdigre. A blend of excellent offense and defense allowed for some solid 2-0 wins to the Cardinals' name. Two days later the Cards entered Tournament play. They went in with a record of 16-4. Their first opponent was Sandhills Valley, who entered with a 2-19. The Cards killed it in the beginning, allowing the Mavericks only 12 on the board. Keeping up this energy, the Cards easily downed the Mavericks and moved on. Next up, Anselmo-Merna, at 11-10 for the season, hosted the Cardinals and were taken out. It was a solid match between the two, but the Cards eked out a win in both sets. Ending off the week's matches, the Cards duked it out with Pleasonton, who held a 15-7 record. The Cards started strong, but the Bulldogs started stronger, taking the opener 25-21. The Cards gave it their all and managed to sneak in a 26-24 win in the second. The final set brought the game back to the Bulldogs, thus giving them the hard-earned win. Last week was a solid showing from the Cardinals, and they ended it off bringing their record to 17-5.
