O'Neill's Life Chain will be held from 2-3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 6. Registration begins at 1:30 p.m. at the corner of 3rd and Douglas. Participants will pick up signs and prayer sheets when they register, then join the lines on both sides of Douglas St. and spend an hour in silent witness while praying for the end of abortion. Everyone who believes legalized abortion kills children, hurts women, and needs prayers to be defeated is invited to join this ecumenical prayer vigil. This year there is a heightened need for prayer, due to the amendments to the state constitution on the ballot in November, according to Boyd Holt Right to Life. The Protect Our Right to Abortion amendment, measure 439, reads: All persons shall have a fundamental right to abortion until fetal viability, or when needed to protect the life or health of the pregnant patient, without interference from the state or its political subdivisions. Fetal viability means the point in pregnancy when, in the professional judgement of the patient's treating health care practitioner, there is a significant likelihood of the fetus' sustained survival outside the uterus without the application of extraordinary medical measures. Kristin New, a licensed mental health therapist in Omaha, who used to work for an abortion clinic, feels the language is intentionally vague. “It feels like a manipulative attempt to make things foggy so that people don't really know what it is that they're voting for.” She is concerned about the definition of ‘fetal viability' and who would determine that. There is no requirement that the ‘treating healthcare practitioner' be a doctor. The amendment's definition of ‘viability' does not depend on a gestational age, it depends on whether the baby needs medical supports to survive outside the womb. Any aged baby needing NICU care could be deemed nonviable, by the treating healthcare practitioner, who could be the abortionist, according to New. New's own views on abortion changed after she witnessed an ultrasound of a second-trimester as it was performed. Measure 434 reads: Except when a woman seeks an abortion necessitated by medical emergency or when the pregnancy results from sexual assault or incest, unborn children shall be protected from abortion in the second and third trimester. It does not establish a right to abortion in Nebraska's state constitution. (0) COMMENTSWelcome to the discussion.
