The O'Neill Football team hosted the top rated Pierce team last Friday in O'Neill. The Pierce squad came into the match 4-1 taking their only loss to Wahoo early in the season. The Blue Jays were tough and left the Eagles lair with a 20 point, 53-33, win. Pierce struck first on a 36 yard rushing touchdown and with the kick went up 7-0 in the first. The Eagles couldn't contain the Blue Jay backfield as Pierce ran in a 79-yard touchdown just shy of the end of the first quarter to put them up 14-0. The Eagles struck first in the second after a drive down in Pierce's danger zone and with eight minutes left before half the eagles punched it in on a three yard touchdown to get on the board and trail 14-7. Pierce on a long drive took the ball down to the O'Neill 24 and on the next play punched in the Blue Jay's third touchdown and went up 20-7 after missing the PAT. Pierce scored once more before the half going up 26-7. The Eagles took another shot at the end zone and with about a minute left scored again to trail Pierce. 26-13 at the half. The Eagles managed to score once in the third but fell short to the Blue Jay's 14 put up in the third. The Blue Jays and the Eagles both played the bench in the fourth with each squad scoring 13 to end the match. Pierce had 451 yards of rushing with the Eagles being held to 294. The Blue Jays had two runners in triple digits with Keenan Valverde taking down 185 yards and Champion White with 131 yards. Leading the Eagles was Porter Mathews with 96-yards of rushing on 15 carries for two touchdowns, Brady Eichelberger 11 carries for 75 yards, Oliver Schluns six carries for 28 yards, Drew Morrow four carries for 35 yards, Grady Welke had a touch down for six points, Drew Morrow three carries for 45 yards, Colten Shoemaker two carries for 26 yards and one touchdown, and Braxen Eichelberger three carries for 10 yards. Leading the Eagle receivers were Turner Heiss with a 11 yard touchdown catch, Brady Eichelberger with five catches for 55 yards,Porter Mathews one catch for 11 yards, Hunter Wilson one catch for eight yards and Ryder Pokorny two catches for eight yards. Leading the defense for the Eagles were: Welke 11 tackles, Mathews six tackles, Tucker Shabram five tackles, Brady Eichelberger four tackles, Pokorny two tackles, Morrow and Schluns two tackles, Wilson, Braxton Eichelberger, Morrow and Osborne one tackle each.
