O'Neill Boys Recovering From Tourney Losses

Feb 15, 2023 (0)

Eagle Ryder Pokorny goes up for a lay-up against Plainview in action from last week.

The OHS boys tasted defeat during the Feb. 1st Tournament some weeks ago, but now it's time for them to show what they are really capable of.

The boys first match since the end of the Tourney was against the Elkhorn Valley Falcons only two days later. This was a pretty even match, but of course, only one team can come out on top.

The Falcons made a huge statement right away, blowing away the Eagles 20-8. Second quarter wasn't helping the Eagle's already major point gap when they faltered by five points.

By quarter three, the Eagles knew they were in trouble and needed to up their offensive and defensive plays. They turned the game on its head and took the set 19-11. The final quarter was also an Eagle victory, but even with these two solid quarter wins, the Falcons had made too big an impression and still won the match.

Landon Classen steals the game with 21 points, shooting three of seven three-pointers for 43 percent and three of nine two-pointers for 33 percent, as well as seven rebounds; Drew Morrow follows close with 19 points and five rebounds; Colton Osborne 13 points and five rebounds; Tyler Diediker eight points and two rebounds; Turner Heiss three points and two rebounds; Kyler Dean six rebounds; and Ryder Pokorny one rebounds.

The last match may have gone to their opponent, but the Eagles weren't about to let it get to them. The next day the Eagles hosted the Plainview Pirates and easily overpowered the competition.

Right from the start, it was clear the Eagles had their opponent out-matched. First quarter ended with the Eagles up 22-9. Things wouldn't pick up much for the Pirates from here.

The start of third quarter saw the Eagles ahead by 19 points-not an impossible comeback, but not an easy one. Unfortunately for the Pirates, quarter three was only worse for their score than the previous set. The final quarter was the last one the Eagles needed in order to bring down the Pirates in a 4-0 wash.

Classen again impresses with his 33 point game, shooting five of seven three-pointers for 71 percent and seven of nine three-pointers for 78 percent, as well as six rebounds; Morrow still follows with 24 points and four rebounds; Heiss nine points and eight rebounds; Osborne seven points and five rebounds; Pokorny five points; Diediker three points and two rebounds; Alder three points; Dean two points and three rebounds; Trevor Alder three points; and Matt Ross three rebounds.

The boys got a three day break after the last match, but on Friday they traveled to Ord to face the Chanticleers. If the last match wasn't proof enough of the Eagles talent, then this match certainly is.

It started off with the Eagles taking an early lead of 12 points, followed by an additional 11 by the end of quarter two.

Quarter three was a struggle, but the Eagles did manage to come out on top, winning 19-16. The final quarter only further cemented the Eagles victory over their opponent, taking home the win 71-38.

Morrow climbs his way to 1st this time with 33 points, shooting nine of 20 three-pointers for 45 percent and three of nine two-pointers for 33 percent, as well as 12 rebounds; Osborne  had 15 points and six rebounds; Heiss eight points and five rebounds; Dean seven points and five rebounds;  Classen four points and three rebounds; Diediker and Kohl both two points and two rebounds each; and Alder and Dusatko both two rebounds each.
