The Nebraska Scholastic Wrestling Coaches Association has announced their Hall of Fame inductees for the Class of 2023!

The NSWCA was created in 1975 by a group of wrestling coaches headed by Jim Holechek of Lincoln East. Holechek and others envisioned an organization of wrestling coaches dealing specifically with wrestling and not under the umbrella of the Nebraska Coaches Association. The overall objective was to be “improvement of all phases of wrestling in the state of Nebraska.”

The 2023 NSWCA Hall of Fame class is highlighted by longtime West Holt Head Wrestling Coach Randy Schroeder!

Schroeder got his start in coaching in the 1984-85 school year for Rushville. During his first year, Schroeder coached four state qualifiers with two earning medals. During the 1988-89 season, Schroeder and his team won six of seven tournaments and four of five duals! Although, the best season at Rushville came in Schroeder's last year at the school as he and his team won their district tournament, conference tournament, had four state medalists, and earned a seventh place finish at the State Tournament! While at Rushville, Schroeder coached 28 state qualifying wrestlers and eight state medalists!

Brian Snyder, a former Rushville wrestler for Coach Schroeder, had this to say about his old coach. “Coach Schroeder was my wrestling coach from 1985-89 at Rushville High School. In addition to being a great coach of wrestling techniques and fundamentals, his influence has had a huge impact on many wrestlers, extending well beyond their high school wrestling careers.”

In 1990 Schroeder moved to Atkinson to start his coaching and teaching career for the West Holt Huskies. Since joining the program at West Holt, the Huskies have benefited greatly by the coaching and guidance from Coach Schroeder. In his time at West Holt, Schroeder has coached three state champions, three state runner-ups, 26 state medalists, and 84 state qualifiers!

In total, Schroeder has been a wrestling coach for 39 years! He is responsible for starting the Atkinson-West Holt peewee wrestling tournament. Not only has Schroeder been instrumental in growing the sport of wrestling at West Holt, but he has dedicated his time and effort to raise funds to provide West Holt with a wrestling room as well. When you think of West Holt Husky wrestling you immediately think of Randy Schroeder.

The NSWCA Hall of Fame Banquet will be Friday, June 9th at the Borders Inn & Suites Banquet Room in Grand Island.
