Spencer — Lucille Nell Bowman, 98, of Spencer, died Friday, Sept. 30, 2022 at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk after a brief illness.

Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, 2022 at Brockhaus Funeral Home in Spencer.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, 2022 at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Spencer. Pastor Glen Stahlecker will officiate.

Burial will be in the Union Cemetery in Spencer.

Memorials may be made to the family for future designation.

Lucille was born Nov. 24, 1923, to Harry and Clarice (Kerbel) Johnson of Hamill, SD, and was the oldest of six children. The family moved to Spencer in 1930. She graduated from Spencer High School in 1942 and attended Midland College for nine weeks and received her teacher's certificate. Lucille taught school in Holt, Sarpy and Dodge counties in Nebraska.

Lucille married Carl Derald Bowman on Nov. 23, 1946. They were the parents of 16 children, including three sets of twins. The 14 surviving children all graduated from Spencer High School. They raised their family on a farm south of Spencer.

Derald passed away Oct. 10, 1986, and shortly after Lucille left the farm and moved into a house in town.

Lucille busied herself selling Watkins, crocheting and knitting afghans, potholders and scratchers, visiting with friends and family, going to church and the senior center. 

Lucille got her driver's license at age 60 and continued to drive until age 96. 

In 2020, she moved in with her daughter Susan when things started shutting down due to Covid-19. In 2022, Lucille moved into Heritage of Bel Air in Norfolk.

Lucille is survived and greatly missed by her 11 children Jeanne Waggoner of Farmersville, IL, Susan (Ray) Blackman of Valparaiso, Bruce Bowman of Inman, Linda (Richard) Stoffer of Sun Valley, AZ, David (Jolene) Bowman of Plainview, Darlene Howell of Bristow, Karen Gehrtz of Pierre, SD, Karol (Bob) Michael of Clearwater, Janet Soper of Larchwood, Iowa, John (Beth) Bowman of Pierre, SD, and Trudy (Hughson) Mansfield of Chadron; two daughters-in-law Sharon Bowman of Norfolk and Shirley Bowman of O'Neill; 31 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Carl Derald Bowman; five children,Gary and infant twin Aneta, Robert, Allen and infant Daniel; two sons-in-law Dennis Waggoner and Ed Howell; three grandchildren Kari Bowman, Jordan Bowman and Evan Bowman; and one great-grandchild Timothy Stoffer.
