Brooks was born on Feb. 18, 1962 to Warren and Mary Kelly in Atkinson. After graduating from West Holt High School in 1980, he went on to earn his bachelor of science degree from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, and his PhD in molecular cell biology and biochemistry from Penn State University.

As his friends and family know, Brooks was the quintessential, stereotypical mad scientist, and he was quite the character too. Brooks spent the better part of three decades researching and studying mushrooms and is the author of dozens of patents in the field of mycology. His early focus on food and nutraceuticals led to real world, ground breaking technologies. In 2013, Brooks co-founded MycoTechnology a food technology company.

Today Colorado based MycoTechnology is the world's leading explorer of mushroom mycelia, operating on a global scale with over a hundred employees and scientists. Mycotechnology works with some of the largest companies in the world using Brooks' pioneering technologies to solve some of the toughest challenges in the food and beverage industries.

Brooks was a true force of nature in both his personal and professional life. He had a lifelong love of the Sandhills and as a child loved spending time with his father Warren at the Fish Club and later with his family.

Despite all his academic and professional success, Brooks felt his biggest accomplishment were his children. He loved them dearly.

Brooks is survived by his six children Sylas (Noel) Bailey-Kelly, Quinn Bailey-Kelly and Ezra Bailey-Kelly, and their mother Barbara Bailey of O'Neill, Seraph Monroe-Kelly, Wylde Monroe-Kelly and Avery Monroe-Kelly, and their mother Wendy Monroe of Nederland, CO; one brother Steven (Ann) Kelly of Omaha; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
