Memorials may be made to Stuhr Museum, Grand Island Education Foundation or Grand Island Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska in Allen's name.

Allen was born on Nov. 14, 1949 in O'Neill, son of Harvey and Lois (Caldwell) Tompkins.

Allen grew up on the family ranch near Inman. In 1967 he graduated from Page High School. He continued his education and graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan University in 1971, where he was a member of the Theta Chi Fraternity. Allen earned his medical degree from UNMC in 1974, he completed his pediatric residency also at UNMC and was board certified in 1977.

On July 22, 1972 he married Janice Wellensiek and the couple was blessed with a son Marc and daughter Jill.

Dr. T began his pediatric practice at the Grand Island Clinic in 1977 until a rare eye disease diagnosis in 1988 ended his private practice. He continued to help the children in the Grand Island community by starting his own practice to evaluate children with learning disabilities. He also spent a year conducting medical research for Harris Labs in Lincoln. In 1991, he was employed as the staff physician at the Grand Island Veteran's Home until 2008. Allen went on to serve as the medical director for AseraCare Hospice until retiring in 2017.

He married Donna Deaton on May 26, 2006 in Grand Island.

Allen was active in Moonshell Arts and Humanities Council, coached numerous youth sports, participated in the Grand Island Chamber of Commerce and First Presbyterian Church. Allen volunteered for the Grand Island Spirit of Nebraska-Camp Cosmopolitan Girl Scouts and served on the advisory board from 2017 until 2019. He was a member of multiple church choirs and Grand Island Concert Association until his retirement in 2017.

Allen's curiosity led him to be a lifelong learner. He spent many hours watching and listening to lectures from various professors on topics ranging from quantum mechanics to archaeology of Greece and Rome. He loved to travel and meet new people throughout his life. He could carry a conversation for hours with someone he just met. Having grown up on the family ranch, Allen enjoyed the outdoors and spent many days on the golf course. Allen loved to help all children and was a beloved and fun dad, granddad and husband.

Allen is survived by his wife Donna Deaton Tompkins of Grand Island; two children Marc (Christine Aita) Tompkins and their children Alexandre, Genevieve and Henry of Minneapolis, MN, and Jill (Phil) Lisius and their children Derek, Brenden and Caleb of Arlington Heights, IL; one stepdaughter Terasina (Travis) Hurley of Grand Island; two stepsons Brian Tobler of Grand Island and Todd Tobler; two brothers Roger (Barbara) Tompkins and Neil (Ruth) Tompkins; one sister Linelle (Ned) Kelley; along with numerous nieces, nephews and friends and family.

He is also survived by his “sponsored” daughters Janka and Sylvia from Slovakia. They lived with the Tompkins family, for varying amounts of time, during their high school and university education. They became family and have stayed close with Allen and the Tompkins family. Janka (Fred) Spiess and Sylvia (Brett) Chloupek and their immediate and extended families have become family as well.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
